Former Navy sailor receives substantial settlement for 2007 accident.
An El Cajon jury awarded a former Navy sailor $7.5 million for injuries he sustained in a 2007 motorcycle accident.
The Daily Mail reports that 27-year-old Matthew Wall suffered crush injuries and nerve damage after his motorcycle was struck by a shuttle bus belonging to a car dealership in the San Diego area. Wall was reportedly on his way to work at the U.S. Navy Submarine Base when the accident occurred.
According to court documents, the van made a left turn in front of Wall, who was unable to avoid a collision. He was launched off the bike, fracturing his pubic ramus bone and sustaining a crush injury and nerve damage to his penis. The accident caused Mr. Wall's penis to be shortened by an inch and a half. He opted to sue the dealership, claiming that the shuttle's driver was an unlicensed, non-U.S. citizen who had not been properly trained to operate the vehicle. Mr. Wall's attorney argued that the incident may affect his ability to have children and his self-esteem, claims the jury evidently agreed with. Defense attorneys have said they will appeal the verdict.
Since the accident, Mr. Wall has left the Navy, moved to South Carolina and gotten divorced from the wife he had married just prior to the incident.
